Sominex is a night-time sleep aid to relieve occasional sleeplessness.
It contains an active ingredient called promethazine hydrochloride, an antihistamine which has a sedative effect.
Sominex is for adults and children over 16 years of age.
You should not take this medicine for more than seven days. If natural sleep does not return within that time or sleeplessness continues you should speak to your doctor.

Adults, the elderly and children over 16:
The recommend dose is one tablet at bedtime.
It may be taken up to one hour after going to bed when you can’t go to sleep.
Do not use this medicine for more than 7 days in a row. If natural sleep does not return within 7 days or you have repeated bouts of sleeplessness talk to your doctor.
Use in children and adolescents:
Do not give to children under 16 unless your doctor tells you to.
Q: Are there any tricks to falling asleep faster?
Establishing a regular sleep routine can help you get better sleep. Try going to bed and getting up at the same time every day and relax and wind down before bedtime. Ensure your room is dark and at a comfortable temperature.
Q: Can you overdose on sleeping tablets?
Taking more than the recommended or prescribed dose of any medicine can be dangerous. If you accidentally take too many Sominex tablets contact your nearest accident and emergency department or doctor immediately.
Q: Why can’t I sleep?
Sleep can evade us for different reasons at different stages of our life. It could be due to illness, anxiety, stress, having a baby or you may naturally be a light sleeper or you just take longer to get to sleep.
Q: Can I take sleeping tablets with other medication?
Before using Sominex, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take other medicines including: Other medicines which make you drowsy; monoamine oxidase inhibitors for depression; Medicines which may give you a dry mouth or blurred vision, e.g. atrophine or antidepressants; Medicines used to reduce / prevent seizures; Strong pain killers as codeine, morphine or buprenorphine; Medicines treating mental illness.
Q: Can children or teenagers take sleeping tablets?
Sominex tablets are for adults and children aged 16 and over. They should not be given to children under 16 unless it’s on the advice of your doctor.
Q: Are there ant side effects of promethazine?
Like all medicines promethazine can cause side effects although not everyone gets them. Possible side effects include drowsiness, confusion, dizziness or headaches, clumsiness and disorientation, stomach upsets or a dry mouth. Always read the leaflet carefully before taking Sominex.
Q: Are sleeping tablets addictive?
The chances of becoming addicted to promethazine are low but it’s recommended you only take it for a short period of time. In general, medicinal sleep aids are not meant to be used long-term and you should speak to your doctor for advice.
